a local art mag dubbed, “artillery”, wrote an article on the Inland Empire curator this month. They just happened to include a stunning shot of my girl “tusk” (on far right) from a show she was in at the Sweeney Gallery in Riverside. this video was projected concurrently within my installation at the Kansas City Art Institute Senior show. It is a documentation of the rooms transformation, comprising over 150 hours of time and compacting it into a two minute video loop. The stop motion film projects the process of evolution within the room, displaying the metamorphosis of the immediate area, and the manifestation that makes it all possible. during the show it was projected onto a wall within the room, contrasting the complex activity with the stagnant, and further defining evolution within personal, social, and institutional realms. The F**k Button’s “sweet love for planet earth” played on repeat from the opening to the close of the show. Link below to You tube vid…

its official, timo sucio is out of retirement and back on the stage with drummer, el max rain, fellow problem solver and maker. last thursday was a first of many shows, and the second (of many) practices. the crowd was left in gaping awe and tepid sickness as the two music makers dreamed dreams.

I know i haven’t been posting lately. a number of cloudy issues involving the “whys” of my daily practice have kept me from paying any attention to this artblog. anyhow, i have moved beyond my existential woes and into a care-free mode of gestural freedom. this has led to an all out active process of full consumption{eat your words}, after all, freedom comes with a price…
even as i write this i am torn between the silent me that wishes to keep this post private, and the loud me that will push publish and get this post logged.
back to my point, join me saturday evening at the craft in america show, or you can come and visit me at Page Park, saturday afternoon as i install a new work for the upcoming berlin wall commemorative. some 40 artists will participate in the mock-up wall that will be installed across wilshire blvd. on november 8th, from 11pm to midnight and will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. more info at this link, http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/culturemonster/2009/10/berlin-wall-segments-arrive-in-los-angeles.html

as most of you know i will be in Mexico City in less than three weeks. I have made contact with a new inner city bicycle arts program! they are opening up a new space in june, but lack the funding to get some tools for the space. I am working on grants etc. to help remedy the situation, but i am also ready to call in some favors!! any of you tool-monkeys out there with an extra set of tire levers or crank pullers or even a set of pliers can now help encourage cyclo-centric arts in Mexico City. All you have to do is contact me, I will get you an address to ship your extras to, or you can bring them to me at warner studios. I will be collecting all the way up until june 17th, when i will be packing to head down to d.f. town! any thoughts, love, prayers and help should be sent muh way via timofahler@gmail.com or 8535 warner drive culver city CA 90232.
AYUDA!
if needs be i can probably find a way to get to you! timo
in my research for the project in Mexico, I came across a workshop I helped with in KC, MO. these pictures remind me of how much fun it is to ride a bike as a kid, and how important it is for us to be involved with that. enjoy, and thank you katherine ghio for putting the umkc bike party/parade together!

adam was the founder of the okc hellkats.
adam survived a near fatal bicycle accident after being hit by a car and thrown off an underpass a few years back.
adam was back riding a year later.

THE TOOL COLLECTION IS GROWING
JULY 24th will begin my work with the CASA BICITEKA, of Centro Historico, D.F., Mexico City. I will be with these kids for a month, building bicycles, making art, and having fun! My L.A. homie Rafa Esparza will be meeting me down there, as I will have been there since june 18th working with an archaeology project.
CASA BICITEKA www.bicitekas.org is a brand new bicycle co-operative and community bike workshop opening in June. The CASA is a non profit organization that helps teach riders how to maintain and fix there bicycles, while building bikes for those less fortunate ones! They have a new program/residency for artists and social workers who wish to go down and help. If anyone is interested shoot me an email and ill get you the info asap.
We will be helping them open shop, and assist them in building a tool and bicycle collection as it becomes available to us. We are currently searching any bike lovers, organizations, bike shops, anyone who wants to help. WE NEED TOOLS. Rafa and I will be collecting tools here in LA, I have written a proposal to a grant organization in order to help pay for the shipping. We have friends collecting tools in Los Angeles, Kansas City and Tulsa OK! Any tools that you do not need and think might help probably will. You can call me at 918 633 9444, or email timofahler@gmail.com , If you don’t think that you can help, but know someone who can, send them a link or an email, every bit of help counts!!!

Casa Bicitekas Project Plan
7/25/10-8/24/10
On June 18th I will be leaving for Mexico City for an Ethno-History Studies Program in conjunction with the UCLA Archaeology Department. This course is a five-week, twelve credit program directed towards the study of ancient cultures in Southern Mexico. After the class, on July 25th I will be joining the newly founded Casa Biciteka, a bicycle education program located in the historical district of downtown D.F., Mexico City. The Casa Biciteka is a project spawned by associates of the renowned Centro del Pueblo, a social arts education program created to educate inner-city youth.
This June I complete my first year in the three-year, MFA Program at UCLA. My study both involves and draws influence from the indigenous cultures of Mexico, the study of addictive behaviors in humanity, and the commuter based efforts of mass-population. Throughout the past ten years I have been involved with various community based art and bicycle commuter workshops in Kansas City, San Diego, San Francisco, and now Los Angeles. It is my intention to take the knowledge that I have gained through these various projects, and apply it to the new endeavor in Mexico City. I remain in contact with these organizations, and am currently collecting donations of bike specific tools for the new shop in Mexico. We will continue to collect tools up until July 20th, when they will subsequently be shipped to Casa Biciteka, and commence the program.
My daily activities will involve assisting Casa Bicitekas in getting their shop or “taller” in order. I will be regularly holding workshops discussing bicycle safety, maintenance, building, recycling, and public awareness towards commuting in the city. My research will involve taking surveys of the proximal cycling population in the downtown area. This information will be utilized by the workshop to provide the assistance their patrons require. Projects involving artistic creation will be designed towards informing the public of the advantages found in commuting by bicycle, and the need for a safe coexistence between cyclists and automotive traffic.
The Casa Biciteka will provide me with living quarters above the workshop for the duration of my engagement. I will be the first artist/assistant to stay in this new space designed for artists in residence. Fellow artists will continue to participate in the program as it evolves. Part of my involvement is to bridge the gap between American artists and the Casa Bicitekas Residency program. In the future I will become a California based liaison. My responsibilities will include maintaining a functioning cultural relationship between the workshop in Mexico City, and the corresponding communities in California.
The goal of this project is to provide a community of self-aware cyclists, who can continue to promote the positive effects of bicycle transportation. In one of the world’s most populated cities, any growth in bicycle commuting would reduce problems with pollution and traffic.
fin, the end of the decade, and two of our comrades will be moving on to the bigger and better, whatever that may be. we had the end of the year crits yesterday, and i took some pictures for you. Ill will start with some photos of me holding the work of one Adrian Saxe, appalled and enthralled, timo
the second half of the gallery is full of JungHwa’s work, my favorite Korean counterpart and fellow first year rocket…
i got to collaborate with this guy in a number of ventures this year, including co-teaching “collabos”, an ass-kicking noise-making balls deep collaborative music class that was in short amazing. ill have pix of the show we played with our students later, but now some of the best illustrations and low-relief work you will ever see, courtesy of the rain maker…
Max’s work ethic is impressive to say the least, he is an ever-present body in the studio.
i have my own pix coming soon, these images come from the start of my crit and the full extent of nan’s. she will be leaving ucla ceramix this year and moving on towards world domination of some sort. her figurative work is a feat for any artist working in clay.
mathias merkel hess, a writer turned artist turned explorer of all things creative and mad(aren’t we all). this guy and i have had many late night talks and rambling tangents that made the whole world seem a chaotic machine, and an artists plaything. he will be moving on to UC Long Beach as an adjunct professor this fall, i wish him well. he will also be a father soon, holy crap! he is an americana gem; a talented thinker, maker, and destroyer(in the best sense).
http://merkelhess.net/
what can i say about the quintessential california experience, meet jeff and you will know what it is. he and max will be the lead men in next years ceramic studios.
I am headed south in a few weeks for a research trip to Oaxaca MX. We will be visiting my freind Salvador @ Mercado Abastos to pick up a stack of shoes(hopefully) that will be appropriated into an amazing sculpture
there will also be an exchange of goods happening with some death masks i have been making recently. We will be there for Dia De Los Muertos, holy shirt.
this is now a blog, art will soon be found at www.timofahler.net
